Current major project commissioned by Unitec Institute of Technology in Auckland. Started in 2002, the whare is a continuing development and provides yet another example of Grant’s growth as an artist. Name : Ihenga / Tangatarua
Location : Waiariki Institute
Media : Mixed Media
Date : 1993 - 1996
Dimensions (m) : Tangaroa Poutokomanawa (4th) 6 * 0.55 * 0.4

Created in 1993 – 1996 on the Waiariki Institute of Technology campus in Rotorua. Grant’s second whare represents a synthesis of experiences gained post Te Papa o te Aroha. New skills such as glass etching, stone working and experience with other medium can be seen around the whare. This work has been said to be a pivotal work by noted scholars, as it links the formal aspects of Maori wood sculpture and modern expression.

Name : Te Papa o te Aroha
Location : Tokoroa
Media : Totara
Date : 1985 - 1987

This is Grant’s first major commission after resigning from the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute and is situated 40km SW of Rotorua, carved between 1985 – 1987. The whare has become an intrinsic part of the Tokoroa community. It could be argued that the carving in this house is classically orientated with various innovative design features.
